Charity Drive to Children Protection Home

E-Learners club from SOCIT had organized Charity Drive in INTI college to raise fund and useful items to be donated to the orphanage. We set up a booth at the 2nd floor main entrance for a week. The booth operated from 10 am to 5 pm so we can collect the items easily from the student. A lot of student donated generously and we managed to collect RM480 in cash and books as well as clothes. We gave a special bookmark designed by our members as a token of appreciation to the students who donated. After the charity drive ended, we gathered all the items and hand it to the Children Protection Society which is located at Jalan York. The management of the orphanage accepted the items with a warm heart. This event was organized to show that college students also can involve in social activity as well as can contribute to the community. We take this opportunity to thank whoever donated during the charity drive week.

Career Exposure Series 2009

INTI International College Penang recently organized Career Exposure Series 2009 (27th June 2009)t o prepare students for the working world. Two (2) external speakers were invited namely Mr Tan Chia Lih from Jobstreet.com and Mr Bernard Hay from Asia Internet Marketing Academy.

Mr Tan gave a very insightful presentation on the current state of the job market in Malaysia. Among the points presented were that many fresh graduates find difficulty securing jobs because of poor English, unrealistic salary expectations and lack of communication soft skills. A simple tip for prospective job seekers is to simply SMILE during the interview!

Mr Hay shared his experience on becoming an entrepreneur and starting an internet marketing business. Among the startling revelations were that internet commerce is an extremely lucrative business and you do not need even need to know IT to be in it!

SOCIT Team Building May 2009

On the 16, 17 and 18th of May, 2009. SOCIT organized a Team Building Camp in collaboration with Inti’s Team Building Office and 4 members from Frisbee team. The camp is held in Nature Lodge, Penang Hill. The camp is coordinated by our very own Mr. Edmund Tan from TBO.The actual purpose of the team building camp is to remove the gap between the new semester students and students from the earlier semester. Not only has it h elped to bond the students in SOCIT, the participants also learned several essential objectives that are needed to be and form a team, such as leadership, communication, individual talent and commitment. Most of the things that we learned are mainly through games and activity held at nature lodge. Games such as charades where we learned communication skills with team members and also to develop our individual talents and skills. Volley Bomb, a game where team coordination among team members is a must to achieve our goals. Throughout the games, we also learned to have a strong commitment towards ourselves and to our team. Students of SOCIT can now communicate better with each other as they have broken the gap that divides the student from different semesters. We no longer ignore each other when we meet in the canteen or any part of the school. The Team Building session also have cultivate a strong sense of belonging to SOCIT among IT students and directly make them to be more active and participative in all collge activities organized by IICP. The effect of the camp is also quite fruitful as SOCIT has established it’s very own Research and Development division (a subsidiary division of E-learners) where students from SOCIT can share and discuss their problem that they faced in their studies and also foucs mainly on new discoveries.

Educational Visit

On 21st May 2009, SOCIT organized an Educational Visit to Traffic Control Centre at Penang’s Komtar Tower 13th floor. The visit was only opened to student who is currently taking Network Studies. There were about 10 students who participated the visit to the TCC including our very own HOS Mr. Krishnamoorthy. The visit helped our student to understand how IT can be used to help in the community and how private companies work together with the government. Apparently, there are 2 private companies which are working for the government at the moment, they are Tyco Traffic and Transportation which uses their state of art traffic control system SCATS which is deployed over the globe and Pascal Engineering which uses a SIEMIENS based system for traffic control. The representative of both companies is sporting enough to let us have a view of their system and even tell us how it works.

The students who participated in this visit have gained quite a load of useful information. The system from both of the companies emphasize on Server/Client relationship, which is essential knowledge for Networking Students. They have learned stuff such as services a server can provide. Eg: Hardware diagnosis and failure alert, Asset management, Security auditing and Data management (Data Backup and Restoration). However, SOCIT has established a R & D team which we will try to organize more visits to boost our student’s knowledge about Information Technology.
